While Kathansh is new, my love for storytelling and expertise as a fiction editor has long been established. Back in 2019, I was stuck in an engineering program until one day I took a leap of faith to pursue my true calling.

Since then, I've achieved remarkable milestones — from publishing my debut novel to winning prestigious writing contests and earning an MFA in Creative Writing. Each triumph, each setback, has shaped me into the editor and coach I am today.

My Journey

The Beginning

In 2018, I was grinding as an engineering student buried under assignments and societal expectations. Owing to my love for stories, I was also writing a book in my spare time.

Yes, it all began as a hobby!

By 2020, my debut novel was published to reader acclaim, while my short stories won numerous contests, leading to more publications.

This led to the ultimate epiphany: storytelling was not only my passion but also my true calling in life.

So one fine day I walked out of campus placements and set out to be a storyteller.

After much hustling, I landed a 6-month internship at a publishing house where I worked as a line + copy editor.

I was having fun until, bam! A pandemic hit and we were all stuck at home.

I started connecting with authors online, offering them a helping hand with their stories. Soon I discovered the joy and creative possibilities of collaborating directly with the writers one on one.

So I quit my job at the publishing house and thus began my freelancing journey!

The Struggle

The Growth

In the following six months, I found myself attracting more and more author clients from around the world—USA, UK, Germany, you name it!

I was living the dream, immersed in stories day in and day out. And knowing how much my clients loved my edits brought me immense joy.

Yet, amidst this growth, I found myself continually pushed beyond my comfort zone as I tackled diverse novels and worked with different authors. While I enjoyed this growth phase initially, it left me feeling strangely meh!

Somewhere, something was missing…

Here's the kicker: while I had experience editing stories, I lacked a deeper understanding of the core storytelling elements.

Essentially, I knew what I was doing but I didn't fully grasp why some of my edits resonated with certain stories while others fell short.

I found myself in awkward situations where I couldn't answer some of my clients' questions if they wanted to know the "why" behind my editorial choices.

What's more, I felt like I was doing a disservice to the authors who trusted me to make them better writers. While I adored the stories I “fixed”, I realized I was spoon-feeding these authors instead of helping them grow in their craft.

The Problem

The Break

I craved the ability to offer more impactful guidance to my clients, but I realized I needed to deepen my understanding of the craft first.

Thus, in Fall 2021, I took a leap of faith: I paused my business, boarded a plane to the other side of the world, and enrolled in the MFA program in Creative Writing at the University of San Francisco.

For nearly three years, I immersed myself in the intricacies of storytelling in a foreign country, away from everything and everyone I’d known.

Though I missed my work during this time, I strived to find the answers to all my questions and return with greater expertise and insight.

In Dec 2023, I graduated from the MFA program, returning to my roots in India, with a renewed passion, power, and purpose.

Quick heads up – I don’t believe a master's degree is necessary for anyone to be a good writer. My goal was to learn how to guide good writers into greatness!

In Feb 2024, I founded Kathansh to embody my ultimate mission: helping writers discover the true essence of their stories, evolve into better storytellers, and live their author dreams.

While great stories are beautifully complex, writers often end up complicating them. I start by deconstructing the story atom by atom, rebuilding it into a clear yet creatively compelling masterpiece, all while preserving the original vibe, voice, and vision.

I find the allure of simplicity so irresistible that it becomes the secret spice in all my custom packages and workflows. There you have it—simple, just the way I like it!

#4 Fun, Freedom & Creativity

At Kathansh, I firmly believe that work should be fun, and if it isn't, it simply won't work out. Here's a little secret: working with stories is the most creatively fulfilling job on the planet… which is why I passionately do what I do, having an absolute blast while relishing the freedom to work from anywhere in the world, anytime on the clock.

Although truth be told, many times, I opt for the coziness of my bed at midnight. Yes, my dear writers, I feel you!

Kathansh is my {Srishti’s} brainchild, born from the fusion of two beautiful Sanskrit words: "Katha," meaning story, and "Ansh," symbolizing the smallest, most essential part of anything. Hence, the tagline atom of story.

You see, for me, writing isn't just a passion—it's the very essence of existence. And Kathansh perfectly captures my mission {read as *obsession*} of exploring the heart, soul, and science of storytelling in a way that helps storytellers turn manuscripts into masterpieces.
